Module 1: What is a RIC, really?

The history, structure, and purpose of California's Regional Improvement Communities — and what makes them different from other PL formats.

Before there were Regional Improvement Communities (RICs), regional math PL in California often took the shape of an annual conference: one big gathering, lots of speakers, very little follow-through. RICs were designed to be the opposite — small, recurring, locally rooted, and aimed at change in practice rather than transmission of information.

A RIC has four convenings across a school year, organized around the rhythm of district planning, classroom implementation, and reflection cycles. Each convening is led collaboratively by Service Region Co-Leads (SRCLs), with coaches and admins from across the region working together on a shared instructional improvement focus.

Reflection
Think about the last regional PL gathering you attended. What was it designed to make happen back at school — and did it?
